Why aren't you ready for a new retirement lifestyle?

Throughout my many years in the senior living industry, one of the most common statements I've heard from older adults is, "I'm not ready yet." Many times it's in response to their family members suggesting a potential move to an apartment or condo or a senior living community.

I can understand why some may not feel they're ready for a new retirement lifestyle. Every one's situation is different, and for many, change is difficult. But my response to those who feel this way is, "Why not? What type of lifestyle or services are you not ready for?, chef prepared meals?, housekeeping? fun and activities? There's no time like the present to enjoy the retirement lifestyle of your choice.

My best advice is to first do your research. I recommend considering the positive benefits of each potential situation and asking yourself the following questions:
  • What do you think has to happen to you before you feel you are ready?
  • How will you know when you are ready, and do you really think it will be easier to make a decision now or in the future?
  • Are you going to be capable of making this decision in the future yourself, or is it going to be left up to your children to do it for you?

Whether you decide to stay in your current home, downsize or move to a senior living community, it's important to make decisions about your future while you're still able to enjoy everything your preferred housing option has to offer. Starting your decision making journey by taking a significant look at your needs and asking yourself some important questions is a step in the right direction. Why not?
